What Is ADHD?

ADHD, which stands for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, impacts millions of people around the world, including both kids and adults. It’s easy to assume that the behaviors of children come from a place of bad behavior or lack of discipline. However, the truth is that ADHD presents a unique set of challenges that vary by individual and can affect the long-term development of children when unattended.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Fifty percent of children with ADHD continue to experience symptoms as adults.

ADHD involves patterns and symptoms that involve a lack of self-regulation, inconsistent behavior, and different responses to consequences. Although ADHD affects a child’s sociability and performance at school, kids who have it tend to be highly intelligent and should have no trouble developing when treated effectively.

ADHD Types & Diagnosis at Katy Pediatric Associates

ADHD is far from a standardized condition. While many associate it merely with distraction and hyperactivity, ADHD presents in various subtypes, each with distinct symptoms.

Predominantly Inattentive Presentation

The classic ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), in this case, is characterized by ongoing difficulties in maintaining focus on activities that do not provide continuous stimulation. It is also quite common to struggle with maintaining order and to have a clear tendency toward disorganization.

By comparison to other subtypes, it’s often missed due to its less disruptive nature, being the case that a quiet child can go undiagnosed even if he has trouble retaining information or daydreams too much.

Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Presentation

This subtype is often easier to identify due to its hallmark traits: excessive physical activity, fidgeting, impulsivity, and impatience.

Parents and teachers may confuse these symptoms with anxiety or OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).

Disruptive behaviors in social settings or classrooms can lead to earlier diagnoses or being misinterpreted as bad behavior rather than a neurological condition.

Combined Presentation

This one involves a combination of both subtypes and is the most common among the population, including symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. It puts the patient (and their families) in a hard situation since balancing focus and impulse control is a daily struggle.

ADHD Treatments

ADHD can affect a child’s ability to learn or pay attention, and it also can affect relationships with family and other children. Children will encounter a lot of obstacles if they do not get the right treatment.

Fortunately, early intervention can improve academic performance, social interactions, and self-confidence. The treatment helps harness ADHD strengths, like creativity or hyperfocus, turning weaknesses into advantages.

The core pillars of ADHD Treatment include:

  • Behavioral Therapy
  • Medication
  • Lifestyle Adjustments
  • School Accommodations
