What Is Infant Colic?
Infant colic refers to a condition in which your baby cries frequently, intensely, and for prolonged periods of time with no apparent or obvious reason. These episodes usually last more than three hours a day, more than three days a week, or consistently for around three weeks.
The crying often takes place in the late afternoon and is difficult to calm, as parents may try feeding, changing the baby or putting them to sleep without success. Colics typically start two or three weeks after birth and are common until four months old.
What Causes It?
While there is no specific cause for a colic, there are common contributing factors. Remember that these might vary depending on your child’s age, previous health conditions, etc.:
- Digestive system development, as their growing and adapting body might create more gas and generate discomfort.
- Food allergies or intolerances
- Imbalance of gut bacteria
- Over or underfeeding
- Early childhood migraine
- Overstimulation from light and noise
If your baby starts crying uncontrollably for hours, it is time to schedule an appointment with your pediatrician. They will rule out other possible causes (like infant reflux, infections, injuries, etc), and guide you into the possible treatments for colics.
Symptoms of Infant Colic
If your baby has been crying consistently and excessively for hours, and these episodes repeat over the course of the days and weeks, it is probably a case of infant colic. Besides this, you might also notice additional signs, such as:
- Crying at the same time every day
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep because of the crying
- Common activities interrupted by crying, like eating
- Thrashing their arms and legs when crying
