At Katy Pediatric Associates, we understand the importance of addressing your baby’s nutrition for optimal health. If you suspect your baby is struggling with infant reflux, it could be impacting their ability to keep food down and gain weight properly.
What Is Infant Reflux?
Infant reflux (or gastroesophageal reflux GER) happens when milk or formula flows back into the esophagus instead of staying in the stomach. While infant reflux is not normally a serious condition, it can lead to frequent spitting up that ultimately may affect your baby’s weight and growth. In some instances, infant reflux may indicate more serious issues, like a digestive blockage or an allergy.
Infant Reflux Symptoms
While infant reflux normally dies down by the time your baby reaches 18 months, as a parent, you have to pay attention in case any of these symptoms arise:
- Poor weight gain
- Refused food
- Spitting up blood/ constant spitting up
- Irritibality
- Difficulty breathing
- Persistent coughing
If your baby is exhibiting any of these signs, it may be an indicator or a more serious condition like a digestive blockage or GERD, where acid begins to damage the lining of the esophagus.

How Is Infant Reflux Treated?
In cases where infant reflux doesn’t solve on its own or leads to more serious complications, our team may recommend short-term acid-blocking medications to help your baby keep food down. These strategies may also help:
- Offer your child smaller, more frequent feedings
- Keep your baby upright for 20 to 30 minutes after feedings
- Thicken breast milk or formula (if your pediatrician approves)
- Try different formulas
- Burp your baby more frequently during feedings
Early intervention is key to ensuring your baby’s weight gain and healthy growth.
