What You Need To Know About Sore Throats

A sore throat or pharyngitis is a scratchy, painful feeling in your pharynx (back of your throat) and it normally hurts to swallow or talk.

The causes behind a sore throat are many and different: from viral and bacterial infections to allergies to sleeping with your mouth open or the AC on.

There are two main types of pharyngitis:

  • Acute pharyngitis it’s a sore throat that lasts from about 3 to 10 days. Most sore throats fall under this category.
  • Chronic pharyngitis it’s a sore throat that lasts for more than 10 days (usually several weeks) or that keeps coming back once your child is feeling better.

Sore Throat Symptoms

Pharyngitis normally starts with a raspy feeling in the throat, as if it’s dry. When sore throats are getting worse, your child will feel a sharp pain every time they swallow or talk. Ear and down the side of the neck pain are particularly common during this stage as well.

If the sore throat is caused by an infection, there are additional symptoms to look out for:

  • Headaches
  • Fever
  • An upset tummy
  • Stuffy nose
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • White patches in the throat
  • Redness or swelling in your throat and tonsils
