Sports Physical

Pediatricians in Houston, Texas

.

At Katy Pediatric Associates, we are all for an active lifestyle! When signing up your child for their next sporting activities, we are happy to perform a physical evaluation so that you can rest easy that they are in condition to do it—or know what their limitations are so as to do it to the best of their abilities.

What Are Sports Physicals?

When you sign up your child for sports, his or her coach might ask you to get them a certification that he or she is healthy enough to meet the physical demands of the sport. Even if they don’t ask for it, you should always check this when your kid picks up new athletic activities.

These exams differ from well-child visits and routine check-ups in that they are aimed at assessing risk factors that might affect your child’s ability to perform certain physical activities. Although they are similar to standard physical exams, they should not be taken as substitutes of the recommended annual checks.

How Should My Child (and I) Prepare for a Sports Physical?

There is no previous preparation necessary for a child’s sports physical in Houston, Texas. Showing up is enough! Also, we recommend that he or she wear comfortable clothes. Typically, you will fill out a form before the pediatric evaluation, which we will provide if your child’s school or sports organization hasn’t.

It is important that you complete this before your child begins the activity, but not so far in advance, since the results need to be current. We encourage families to check with the institution about how long the results are valid.

What Happens During My Child’s Sports Physical?

A sports physical takes approximately 30 minutes, during which your pediatrician will:

  • Check your child’s vitals
  • Check their height, weight, and eyesight
  • Review your child’s medical history, discussing any recent illnesses, surgeries, or potentially troublesome conditions like chest pains or asthma.
  • Conduct a fitness check, which involves:
    • Assessing your child’s heart, lungs, and abdomen.
    • They also check their joints and flexibility.
