What is Formula Intolerance?

Babies have formula intolerance when they have trouble digesting certain ingredients and/or components present in the formula, which does not constitute an allergic reaction. Although formula intolerance is not caused by an immune response, it can lead to digestive problems and discomfort. These are the most common formula intolerance symptoms:

  • Too much spitting
  • Irritability after feedings
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Bloating and gassiness
  • Abdominal discomfort or cramping
  • Reflux or colics
  • Skin rashes or eczema

Symptoms will vary based on the severity of the intolerance. In the majority of cases, formula intolerance is only temporary and can be tackled by changing your baby’s formula.

What Is Cow’s Milk Allergy?

A cow’s milk allergy is a food allergy that triggers an immune reaction to the proteins found in cow’s milk, like casein and whey. This immune reaction can cause more severe reactions. Cow’s milk-based formula is recommended for infants who are not breastfeeding, yet some babies can develop an inability to digest formula that contains milk.

These are the most common symptoms:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea and constipation
  • Hives, skin rashes or eczema
  • Wheezing or coughing
  • Excessive crying or irritability
  • Blood in stool
  • Failure to gain weight
  • Poor growth

Formula Intolerance vs Cow’s Milk Allergy

Formula intolerance and cow’s milk allergy are two different conditions. Formula intolerance refers to the difficulty babies have to digest certain ingredients in their formula, like lactose or other proteins, and it does not involve an immune response.

On the other hand, cow’s milk allergy is an immune system reaction to proteins in cow’s milk, which has more severe symptoms.
